How To Install Workshop Custom Maps

Mecha Chameleon has official modding tools and full Steam Workshop support, and the custom-map scene keeps the game fresh long after you’ve memorized the official stages.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. From the main menu, open the Maps/Workshop button (bottom-left).
  2. Browse the Steam Workshop and hit Subscribe on any map that catches your eye.
  3. Let Steam auto-download the map — subscribed maps install automatically.
  4. Host a server and select the downloaded community map from the level selector.
  5. Test the map privately first if you’re hosting for a group.

Mid-session swapping: as of Patch 1.2.0, you can swap Workshop maps without recreating the server — great for community game nights.

Fixing Download Problems

If a subscribed map refuses to download or doesn’t appear in your map list:

What Community Maps Offer

Custom stages range from dense supermarket shelves stuffed with hundreds of props to recreations of famous locales with entirely new lighting conditions. When browsing the Workshop:

  • Check player counts — some maps are tuned for small lobbies, others shine with 10+.
  • Read the lighting notes — dark maps reward dark base pigments; bright maps punish flat paint.
  • Subscribe before game night — everyone in your room needs the map installed.

Making Your Own Maps

Official modding tools let you build and publish custom stages to the Workshop. If you’re starting out, explore an existing map’s structure first, verify the current editor path from the official tools, and test your stage in a private room before publishing.

Guide FAQs

Why are my subscribed Workshop maps not showing up in-game? +

Verify game file integrity via Steam Library -> Mecha Chameleon -> Properties -> Installed Files -> Verify Integrity of Game Files, and ensure Steam Cloud Sync is enabled. Then restart the game and check the map selector in your lobby.

Can I play Workshop maps with friends? +

Yes. Host a server, select the subscribed custom map in the level selector, and invite friends to your room. Patch 1.2.0 even lets you swap Workshop maps mid-session without recreating the server.
